CampusKit is local-first: everything you enter is one SQLite database on your disk. That makes backups simple, and it means you are the only one who can lose the data, so this page is worth two minutes.
Automatic backups
The app takes a backup once a day while it is running and keeps the newest 12. You do not have to do anything. To see them, open Settings, choose Data & backups, and look under Backups.
- Back up now creates one on demand. Do this before a big change, such as deleting a semester.
- Restore next to any backup rolls the database back to it. A safety snapshot of the current state is taken first, so a restore can itself be undone.
Export
Under Export on the same page:
- Full JSON export writes every table as human-readable JSON. AI keys are excluded. This is your “take everything with me” option and the format is stable enough to script against.
- Calendar (.ics) writes deadlines and weekly class meetings for Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook. See import from Canvas or Google for the reverse direction.
Where the database is
The file is named campuskit.db and lives in the app’s data folder in your user profile:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/in a folder named CampusKit (orcampuskiton older installs). - Windows:
%APPDATA%(usuallyC:\Users\you\AppData\Roaming) in a folder named CampusKit.
The database runs in write-ahead-log mode, so you may see campuskit.db-wal and campuskit.db-shm next to it. They are part of the database. Always quit CampusKit before copying the folder; the app checkpoints the log on quit so the .db file alone is complete.
Move to a new computer
The easiest way is CampusKit Cloud: sign in with the same email on the new computer and everything comes down. Without Cloud, move the file by hand:
- On the old computer, quit CampusKit and copy the whole data folder above to a USB stick or cloud drive. Alternatively take a Full JSON export, which is smaller but is not importable back yet; use it as a safety copy.
- On the new computer, install CampusKit and open it once so the folder is created, then quit.
- Replace the new folder’s contents with the copy.
- Start the app. Your semesters, courses and grades are there.
AI keys and the Pro license are stored in the operating system keychain, not in the database, so re-enter your key in Settings, AI, and activate Pro again on the new device (one key covers three).
Corrupted database
If the database ever fails to open, restore the most recent backup from Settings, Data & backups. That is the main reason daily backups exist. If the app itself will not start, the backup files sit in a backups folder next to the database, and hello@campuskit.app can walk you through putting one back by hand.
What never leaves your device
Your planner database stays on your computer. CampusKit can check GitHub for releases, validate your Pro license with Polar, and send AI requests to the provider you configured. Windows installation and updates through the Microsoft Store also contact Microsoft’s services. These installation and update requests do not upload your planner database to us. There are no analytics, and you need no CampusKit account.
The one exception is CampusKit Cloud, and only if you turn it on: then a copy of your planner data is kept on our servers so your computers can sync and so it can be backed up every week. The privacy policy explains all of these connections.
